  1. Airy, George Biddell 1801-1892.
  2. English astronomer. He installed a transit
  3. telescope at the Cambridge University
  4. Observatory at Greenwich, England, and
  5. accurately measured Greenwhich Mean Time by
  6. the stars along the line of zero longitude
  7. defined by the position of the observatory.
  8. Airy was made director of the Cambridge
  9. University Observatory in 1828, and became
  10. the seventh Astronomer Royal in 1835. He
  11. began the distribution of Greenwich time
  12. signals by telegraph, and Greenwich Mean Time
  13. as measured by Airy's telescope was adopted
  14. as legal time in Britain in 1880.
